SUMMARY:Research Seminar - Sophie Bacq
DESCRIPTION:Sophie Bacq is Professor of Social Entrepreneurship and Coca-Cola Foundation Chair in Sustainable Development at IMD in Switzerland. A globally recognized thought leader in social entrepreneurship and change\, Sophie investigates and theorizes about entrepreneurial action aiming to solve intractable social and environmental problems\, at the individual\, organizational\, and civic levels of analysis. Sophie has taught and conducted empirical research on social entrepreneurship in Europe\, the United States and South Africa. She has published over 40 articles in top-tier management and entrepreneurship journals\, for which she has received multiple awards. She also serves as a Field Editor for the Journal of Business Venturing\, is a member of the Editorial Review Boards of the Academy of Management Journal\, Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice\, and Journal of Management\, and has guest edited several special issues for Academy of Management Perspectives\, California Management Review\, Journal of Management Studies and International Journal of Management Reviews. Sophie is the Co-Director (with Jill Kickul) of The Annual Social Entrepreneurship Conference\, and Lead Faculty of the award-winning Annual Social Entrepreneurship Doctoral Seminar.Collective Action for Sustainability: Breaking Down Silos in Management Research  Abstract: “Management scholarship has increasingly recognized collective action as crucial for addressing sustainability challenges. While this has generated valuable insights across different management fields\, the literature remains fragmented with limited cross-pollination. Through bibliometric and qualitative analyses of 388 articles\, we identify eighteen distinct research conversations across seven management fields\, revealing both the breadth of collective action scholarship and opportunities for knowledge integration. Our integrative review aims to bridge these conversations while situating sustainability-focused collective action research within broader management scholarship. The review makes three key contributions. First\, we develop an organizing framework that demonstrates how sustainability challenges manifest across multiple levels of analysis and allows us to analyze how different management fields contribute to understanding collective action at different levels. Second\, we show how research conversations not explicitly focused on sustainability can meaningfully inform the study of collective action for sustainability. Third\, we identify promising directions for future research\, including shifting focus from “commons creation” to “commons governance\,” exploring boundary conditions of collective action\, and examining both intended and unintended outcomes. By bringing scholarly communities together\, our review lays the foundation for more rigorous and impactful scholarship at the nexus of CA and sustainability.“

DESCRIPTION:This Research Seminar was organized by the ERA Chair in Social Innovation and the Management & Organizations department. \n\n\n\nGorgi Krlev is Associate Professor of Sustainability at ESCP Business School in Paris. He also holds a Visiting Professorship at Politecnico di Milano and is a Visiting Fellow at Kellogg College\, University of Oxford. \n\n\n\nIn his research\, he deals with social entrepreneurship\, social innovations and impact\, with a particular focus on how cross-sector collaborations and new field emergence promote societal transformations and contribute to addressing environmental and social sustainability challenges. \n\n\n\nHis open access book Social Innovation: Comparative Perspectives received a best book award from the Academy of Management (AOM). His new book Social Economy Science: Transforming the Economy & Making Society More Resilient won the Virginia A. Hodgkinson Prize by ARNOVA. \n\n\n\nTitle: SCALING\, BECOMING OR TRANSFORMING THE MARKET? GLOBAL PUBLIC-PRIVATE INITIATIVES IN IMPACT INVESTING  \n\n\n\nAbstract: Impact investing means to address social and environmental problems by combining a social orientation and a market orientation. However\, individual impact investments face many restrictions. They might not be long-term oriented\, prioritize returns over impact\, or be wary of investment opportunities with high impact potential if they appear too risky. Globally\, new public-private initiatives are building novel financial infrastructures to address these issues. We study five of these initiatives in a comparative case study design under the lens of nascent markets. Empirically\, we find three dimensions of market building to classify initiatives: market building strategy\, market building goals\, and governance of market building. Conceptually\, we show how these dimensions can be configured in different ways to produce three implications: scaling the market\, becoming the market\, and transforming the market. We contribute to better understanding the relational foundations of market building as opposed to technical infrastructures\, or a predominant focus on regulating markets formally after their emergence. We also contribute to a recent literature on “early moments” of field formation and enhance it by focussing on the long-term governance challenges of decisions taken in the nascent stages of market building. \n\n\n\nThe ERA Chair in Social Innovation at NOVA SBE has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 951735.

Yet theorizing the future poses a peculiar problem. By definition\, it is not present yet. The conundrum of the future is that it requires conceptualizing and theorizing what is not (yet) observable and does not (yet) exist. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the end of our 2nd Prototyping Fund cycle with the showcase of 13 incredible projects. \n\n\n\nThe Prototyping Fund is a collaborative program offered by the DESIS Lab @NovaSBE and Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute\, created under the project Shaping the World by Innonexus\, funded by the European Union. This program awards teams of students (with at least one member from Nova SBE or LSE) up to €600 or €2000 to be used to build hardware\, software prototypes or prototype engagement activities\, and connects them with the resources\, tools\, and mentors they need to bring their ideas to life. This spring we selected one team who participated in the Fall for the Phase 2 (for 1500 euros). \n\n\n\nIn Phase 1\, we selected 12 projects\, across multiple programs at Nova SBE (with 7 from the Master’s in Impact Entrepreneurship and Innovation) and one from LSE who will join us on campus for the Final Showcase. Projects ranged from upcycling materials and food waste\, climate tech (biochar\, new material)\, energy efficiency\, and health. \n\n\n\nYou can read more about the projects here \n\n\n\nThe Prototyping Fund Showcase will take place on April 22nd from 12:30 pm to 2 pm in the open space in the Food Court at Nova SBE. \n\n\n\nStudents worked hard this semester to prototype and test their ideas and it’s important for them to get feedback and suggestions from different people. As it’s a showcase\, you can stop by for only a short time.

If you want to roll-up your sleeves and get dirty on doing local\, complex\, yet beautiful\, meaningful\, and tangible work\, join this hands-on workshop to partner with peers\, faculty\, and neighbors for 2 hours to transform a small lawn area adjacent to the campus into a thriving\, biodiverse ‘tiny little forest’. We will start with a quick overview of the participatory process that led to this initiative and share the key nature-based principles that informed the design of this landscape. We will then spend most of the time digging\, measuring\, seeding\, planting\, and creating the womb of a ‘tiny little forest’ of 20 square meters. Talude is a self-built neighbourhood a few minutes away from Lisbon’s iconic site for creativity and innovation: Parque Das Nações. While this area in the city is generally know by locals and tourists\, Talude remains somewhat invisible. Yet\, we invite you to visit this place and discover it as a site for sustainability\, innovation and creativity. With very limited resources and a strongly engaged community\, Talude inhabitants find solutions for their everyday life\, through local food production\, manufacturing\, informal education and a sharing economy of human and material resources. Examples include terms like business models\, social entrepreneurship\, hybrid organizations\, social innovation\, system change\, or grand challenges. In this seminar\, I share insights from my scholarly journey that began in the natural sciences (molecular biology) and led me to study social phenomena. A central objective of this journey was to challenge and overcome the limitations of scholarly discourses. I reflect on adopting causal models as analytical scaffoldings for theorizing phenomena. I also discuss the implications of a realist philosophy of science for the validity of knowledge claims and their practical usefulness. Recent studies illustrate the learning journey of this style of theorizing\, its characteristics\, potential\, and challenges.

SUMMARY:Designing the Community Garden at Nova SBE
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and collaborative workshop that aims to shape the NovaSBE Community Garden in alignment with the aspirations and insights collected from the NovaSBE community and the Quinta de São Gonçalo neighborhood. We already know what our community wants to see happening in the space. Now we need to start defining and designing the space according to these wishes. And we want to do it with you! \n\n\n\nWhat’s in Store: \n\n\n\nAn Interactive Design Session that will make you dive into the creation of our community garden. We’ll go through individual reflection from a sensorial experience at the space\, to team work on sharing experiences and analysing the data previously gathered until we finally reach the moment of collaborative designing with all participants. \n\n\n\nWhat is the Community Garden at Nova SBE?The DESIS Lab @Nova SBE together with Johanna Pfeffer\, a Master’s student in Management\, with the support of Cascais municipality have been brainstorming the creation of a Nova SBE Community Garden in Rua da Holanda\, a street that connects the school to the neighboorhoud.A community garden is a place where different groups of people can meet\, organize and participate to activities (such as yoga\, mushroom growing\, talks about permaculture or reading)\, and of course plant some flowers and herbs. In our case\, we want our community garden to bring together students\, teachers\, staff and local residents to enjoy of all of these activities and many more! \n\n\n\nWe have the space\, and over the past months\, we’ve collected information from various members of our community through talks\, forms and workshops regarding their preferences for the space and the activities they would love to engage in there. So now we are moving to the next phase which is: starting to think about what the space should have to address this different areas of engagement. \n\n\n\nOrganizers and facilitators \n\n\n\nThis activity is organized by the DESIS Lab at NovaSBE and the NovaSBE Sustainability Department and is led by: \n\n\n\nBeatriz Bento\, is the DESIS Lab Community Manager\, a creative mind that’s passionate about connecting with people and promoting impact. \n\n\n\nSusana Santos\, is a Sustainability Officer at the Department of Sustainable Impact.
