SUMMARY:Research Seminar – Christian Seelos
DESCRIPTION:This Research Seminar was organized by the Management & Organizations department and the ERA Chair in Social Innovation. \n\n\n\nChristian Seelos is a Distinguished Fellow and Director of the Global Innovation for Impact Lab at the Stanford University Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society. Previously\, he was the Director of Social Innovation Practice at the Harvard Kennedy School Social Innovation for Change Initiative and Academic Visitor at the Skoll Center for Social Entrepreneurship\, served as the Leo Tindemans Chair for Business Model Innovation at KU Leuven\, and was the Director of the IESE Platform for Strategy and Sustainability and faculty at the Strategic Management Department at IESE Business School. \n\n\n\nTitle: Realist Theorizing – Causal Models as Analytical Scaffoldings \n\n\n\nAbstract: Organizational scholarship often revolves around discourses that use ambiguous terms that lack the characteristics of analytically potent concepts. Examples include terms like business models\, social entrepreneurship\, hybrid organizations\, social innovation\, system change\, or grand challenges. In this seminar\, I share insights from my scholarly journey that began in the natural sciences (molecular biology) and led me to study social phenomena. A central objective of this journey was to challenge and overcome the limitations of scholarly discourses. I reflect on adopting causal models as analytical scaffoldings for theorizing phenomena. I also discuss the implications of a realist philosophy of science for the validity of knowledge claims and their practical usefulness. Recent studies illustrate the learning journey of this style of theorizing\, its characteristics\, potential\, and challenges.

SUMMARY:Designing the Community Garden at Nova SBE
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and collaborative workshop that aims to shape the NovaSBE Community Garden in alignment with the aspirations and insights collected from the NovaSBE community and the Quinta de São Gonçalo neighborhood. We already know what our community wants to see happening in the space. Now we need to start defining and designing the space according to these wishes. And we want to do it with you! \n\n\n\nWhat’s in Store: \n\n\n\nAn Interactive Design Session that will make you dive into the creation of our community garden. We’ll go through individual reflection from a sensorial experience at the space\, to team work on sharing experiences and analysing the data previously gathered until we finally reach the moment of collaborative designing with all participants. \n\n\n\nWhat is the Community Garden at Nova SBE?The DESIS Lab @Nova SBE together with Johanna Pfeffer\, a Master’s student in Management\, with the support of Cascais municipality have been brainstorming the creation of a Nova SBE Community Garden in Rua da Holanda\, a street that connects the school to the neighboorhoud.A community garden is a place where different groups of people can meet\, organize and participate to activities (such as yoga\, mushroom growing\, talks about permaculture or reading)\, and of course plant some flowers and herbs. In our case\, we want our community garden to bring together students\, teachers\, staff and local residents to enjoy of all of these activities and many more! \n\n\n\nWe have the space\, and over the past months\, we’ve collected information from various members of our community through talks\, forms and workshops regarding their preferences for the space and the activities they would love to engage in there. So now we are moving to the next phase which is: starting to think about what the space should have to address this different areas of engagement. \n\n\n\nOrganizers and facilitators \n\n\n\nThis activity is organized by the DESIS Lab at NovaSBE and the NovaSBE Sustainability Department and is led by: \n\n\n\nBeatriz Bento\, is the DESIS Lab Community Manager\, a creative mind that’s passionate about connecting with people and promoting impact. \n\n\n\nSusana Santos\, is a Sustainability Officer at the Department of Sustainable Impact. SUMMARY:Design Jam for Sustainable Fashion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our DESIGN JAM FOR SUSTAINABLE FASHION\, hosted by DESIS Lab @Nova SBE in partnership with the Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute\, as part as the project Shaping the World by Innonexus\, funded by the European Union. \n\n\n\nAs the global population continues to grow\, the fashion industry plays a pivotal role in shaping our planet’s future. With the current trajectory\, it is anticipated that by 2050\, the demand for clothing will skyrocket\, placing immense pressure on environmental resources (Ellen MacArthur Foundation). While fashion is a vibrant expression of creativity and identity\, it is also a sector confronted with pressing challenges\, ranging from excessive waste and pollution to exploitative labor practices. As we navigate towards a more sustainable future\, addressing these issues becomes imperative for the well-being of our planet and the ethical evolution of the fashion industry. \n\n\n\nDuring this design jam we will invite participants to engage in multidisciplinary collaboration and ideation to generate meaningful and impactful solutions that address the current social and environmental challenges faced by the fashion industry. \n\n\n\nThis event is open to ANYONE passionate about fashion and / or sustainability and most of all interested in collaborating for social impact.

SUMMARY:Research Seminar - Juliane Reinecke
DESCRIPTION:This Research Seminar was organized by the Management & Organizations department and the ERA Chair in Social Innovation. \n\n\n\nJuliane Reinecke is Professor of Management Studies at Saïd Business School\, University of Oxford. Prof Juliane’s research draws on insights from organisation theory\, political philosophy\, and process studies to explore\, broadly speaking\, how transnational governance institutions emerge and evolve as a result of the interactions of multiple stakeholders to promote more just and sustainable forms of globalisation in global supply chains\, but also organisations in general. \n\n\n\nTitle: Confronting constructive ambiguity and escalating commitment to a collective action institution: the Bangladesh Accord   \n\n\n\nAbstract:  \n\n\n\nThis paper investigates a core challenge in building multi-stakeholder institutions for collective action: A degree of constructive ambiguity – the deliberate use of imprecise language on a sensitive issue – is often needed to overcome conflict and enable agreement among multiple parties. However\, the initially enabling characteristics of constructive ambiguity may complicate implementation when ambiguous commitments must be translated into concrete actions. To examine the role of constructive ambiguity in building an institution for collective action\, we draw on an eight-year study of the Bangladesh Accord for Fire and Building Safety among unions\, NGOs and over 200 companies to end the series of deadly accidents in the Bangladesh garment sector. Despite the ever-present risk of watering down the agreement during implementation\, our findings reveal how parties confronted constructive ambiguity through a political process of meaning negotiation and commitment renewal. We identify the mechanisms through which political conflict was leveraged to wrest repeated action re-commitments from companies\, increasing parties’ skin in the game and leading commitment to escalate beyond initial self-commitment. We advance a political process view of collective action that explains how collective rationality evolves that directs private interests toward collective ends to resolve transnational collective action problems.

SUMMARY:Research Seminar - Karin Buhmann
DESCRIPTION:This Research Seminar was organized by the Management & Organizations department and the ERA Chair in Social Innovation. \n\n\n\nKarin Buhmann is Professor of Business and Human Rights at Copenhagen Business School\, and Professor and Head of the Centre for Law\, Sustainability & Justice at the Department of Law\, University of Southern Denmark. Professor Karin’s research and teaching focus on sustainability and responsible business conduct (RBC) with a particular emphasis on social issues\, especially climate change mitigation\, business responsibilities for human rights\, and sustainable finance. \n\n\n\nTitle: Avoiding losing the essence in translation? The transition of human rights due diligence into hard-law requirements and implications for organizational uptake.  \n\n\n\nAbstract:  \n\n\n\nHuman Rights due diligence was conceived as a management process for business enterprises to identify and manage their adverse impacts. The EU’s proposed Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) will be a major step in turning due diligence into a legally mandated task. This raises a fundamental question on how to ensure the essence of due diligence as an ongoing management process across multiple management functions\, with a focus on sometimes complex qualitative issues across value chains – and particularly avoiding due diligence turning into narrow compliance. The CSDDD is far from the first step in mandatory due diligence\, even within the EU. Previous steps have involved reporting requirements\, amongst others. Based on her studies on the effects of the introduction of non-financial reporting requirements in Denmark and of the implementation of ‘meaningful stakeholder engagement’\, a key element of due diligence\, in green energy contexts\, Professor Buhmann will identify some issues that challenge or condition the effective transformation of due diligence actions into law and back into responsible business conduct in organizations.   \n\n\n\nThis event will serve as an opportunity to discuss the current landscape of research on business and human rights across management\, economics\, and law\, identifying the next important questions that deserve attention as well as research needs. Karin’s presentation will serve as an occasion to discuss more generally how to better connect legal discourses with management and economics discourses on Business and Human Rights\, in research and in practice.

SUMMARY:Research Seminar – Professor Johanna Mair
DESCRIPTION:NOVA School of Business and Economics\, Room B133 \n\n\n\nNova SBE Research Unit and ERA Chair in Social Innovation invited Professor Johanna Mair\, from Hertie School\, for a Research Seminar on ‘The Road to Impact: Do we need to reimagine Grand Challenges Research?’.  \n\n\n\nProf. Johanna Mair\, Professor of Organization\, Strategy and Leadership\, is a Distinguished Fellow at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society\, Academic Editor of the Stanford Social Innovation Review and Co-Director of the Global Innovation for Impact Lab. She serves on the board of foundations and organizations and advises companies\, governments\, and social impact investors on social innovation. \n\n\n\nHer research focuses on how novel organizational forms and institutional arrangements create economic value as well as social impact and the role of innovation in this process. She has published articles in leading academic journals including the Academy of Management Journal\, Academy of Management Perspective\, Journal of Management\, Journal of Management Studies\, Organization Studies\, Journal of Business Ethics\, Research in Organizational Behavior\, Journal of Business Venturing\, Long Range Planning\, Journal of World Business\, Group & Organization Management\, and the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nEditorial notes in leading management journals have urged scholars to address Grand Challenges (GC) as an opportunity for producing knowledge that matters for society. This review explores whether current conceptualizations of GC support a productive path for management and organizational scholarship by guiding empirical inquiry\, facilitating cumulative theory development\, and informing practice. We systematically examine scholarly articles\, calls for papers\, and editorial notes published in management journals for consistency in how researchers use and define the concept of GC and the scope of associated phenomena and attributes. We find three prominent conceptual architectures in use: discursive\, family resemblance\, and phenomenon driven. The variety and incoherence of current uses of the GC concept and the lack of efforts to improve its analytical competence lead us to suggest its retirement. Instead\, we propose building on the enthusiasm around GC research and using GC as a term to define research principles that collectively help align research efforts and improve theoretical development and practice. The principles we propose capture a genuine origin story for management research on GC. \n\n\n\nA conversation based on the article ‘The Future of Grand Challenges Research: Retiring a Hopeful Concept and Endorsing Research Principles’ (Christian Seelos\, Johanna Mair and Charlotte Traeger)

SUMMARY:Research Seminar - Professor Wendy Smith
DESCRIPTION:NOVA School of Business and Economics\,  Room B133 (1st floor) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNova SBE Research Unit and ERA Chair in Social Innovation invited professor Wendy Smith\, from University of Delaware\, for a Research Seminar.  \n\n\n\nThis Research Seminar was organized by Management & Organizations with ERA Chair in Social Innovation. \n\n\n\nProf. Wendy Smith presented “Navigating Paradox is Paradoxical”. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nOver the past decade\, paradox theory has developed impressively. Such advances have been fueled by a rising collective experience of paradox—as change\, scarcity and plurality intensify awareness of conflicting\, interdependent and persistent forces—and by a global community of paradox scholars—notably creative\, dedicated and mutually supportive. We reflect on factors contributing to this scholarly expansion\, offering insights into how advances of paradox theory could generalize to the rise of fields more broadly. We then explore the accumulation of paradox scholarship\, noting the convergence of key ideas and definitions\, while recognizing the divergence of ontologies\, methodologies\, theories\, and phenomena. Building upon expanding insights into how to navigate paradox\, we categorize varied approaches into four sets of tools—assumptions (cognition)\, boundaries (structures)\, comfort (emotions)\, and dynamics (change) —presented within an integrative framework that we label the Paradox System. By doing so\, we highlight the breadth of underlying research\, depict interwoven and paradoxical relationships across categories\, and surface a core insight that navigating paradox is paradoxical. Finally\, we offer suggestions and provocations for future research.

SUMMARY:Research Seminar - Professor Shaz Ansari
DESCRIPTION:Nova School of Business and Economics\, room B005 (floor 0) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNova SBE Research Unit invited professor Shaz Ansari from University of Cambridge for a Research Seminar. \n\n\n\nThis Research Seminar was organized by Management & Organizations with ERA Chair in Social Innovation. \n\n\n\nProf. Shaz Ansari  presented “Experiencing time like groundhog day? Uncovering the morality of time and temporarily in end-of-life care”. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nConflicting perceptions of time – quantitative versus qualitative – are an important source of organizational conflict. Drawing on a longitudinal study of palliative care in Germany\, we observed that such temporal conflict arises not just from a clash in interpretations or social norms about time but from a clash in moral values that individuals attached to time. Staff faced moral pressure to accommodate patients’ subjective experiences of time when confronting death but also needed to “ration” time through productivity-driven clock-based timelines to efficiently serve a large number of patients. First\, our findings suggest that conflicts that arise from a clash in moral values underlying temporalities can be resolved by aligning these conflicting moral values. Second\, while most studies on time in organizations take a binary view – portraying clock time as hegemonic and immoral and qualitative time as humane and moral – we develop a differentiated view whereby both temporalities can be moral and immoral. Third\, we show how moral entrepreneurs can leverage differences in the moral values individuals attach to time within a group and engage in “moral work” to persuade dissenters in that group into embracing an alternative temporality.
