DESCRIPTION:NOVA School of Business and Economics\,  Room B133 (1st floor)​ \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nNova SBE Research Unit and ERA Chair in Social Innovation invited professor Wendy Smith\, from University of Delaware\, for a Research Seminar. ​ \n\n\n\nThis Research Seminar was organized by Management & Organizations with ERA Chair in Social Innovation​. \n\n\n\nProf. Wendy Smith presented “Navigating Paradox is Paradoxical”. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbstract​ \n\n\n\nOver the past decade\, paradox theory has developed impressively. Such advances have been fueled by a rising collective experience of paradox—as change\, scarcity and plurality intensify awareness of conflicting\, interdependent and persistent forces—and by a global community of paradox scholars—notably creative\, dedicated and mutually supportive. We reflect on factors contributing to this scholarly expansion\, offering insights into how advances of paradox theory could generalize to the rise of fields more broadly. We then explore the accumulation of paradox scholarship\, noting the convergence of key ideas and definitions\, while recognizing the divergence of ontologies\, methodologies\, theories\, and phenomena. Building upon expanding insights into how to navigate paradox\, we categorize varied approaches into four sets of tools—assumptions (cognition)\, boundaries (structures)\, comfort (emotions)\, and dynamics (change) —presented within an integrative framework that we label the Paradox System. By doing so\, we highlight the breadth of underlying research\, depict interwoven and paradoxical relationships across categories\, and surface a core insight that navigating paradox is paradoxical. Finally\, we offer suggestions and provocations for future research.

DESCRIPTION:Nova School of Business and Economics\, room B005 (floor 0)​ \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nNova SBE Research Unit invited professor Shaz Ansari from University of Cambridge for a Research Seminar. \n\n\n\nThis Research Seminar was organized by Management & Organizations with ERA Chair in Social Innovation​. \n\n\n\nProf. Shaz Ansari  presented “Experiencing time like groundhog day? Uncovering the morality of time and temporarily in end-of-life care”. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbstract​ \n\n\n\nConflicting perceptions of time – quantitative versus qualitative – are an important source of organizational conflict. Drawing on a longitudinal study of palliative care in Germany\, we observed that such temporal conflict arises not just from a clash in interpretations or social norms about time but from a clash in moral values that individuals attached to time. Staff faced moral pressure to accommodate patients’ subjective experiences of time when confronting death but also needed to “ration” time through productivity-driven clock-based timelines to efficiently serve a large number of patients. First\, our findings suggest that conflicts that arise from a clash in moral values underlying temporalities can be resolved by aligning these conflicting moral values. Second\, while most studies on time in organizations take a binary view – portraying clock time as hegemonic and immoral and qualitative time as humane and moral – we develop a differentiated view whereby both temporalities can be moral and immoral. Third\, we show how moral entrepreneurs can leverage differences in the moral values individuals attach to time within a group and engage in “moral work” to persuade dissenters in that group into embracing an alternative temporality.

DESCRIPTION:Nova School of Business and Economics\, Room D-104 (floor-1)​ \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nNova SBE Research Unit invited Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt from TU Dortmund University a Research Seminar.​ \n\n\n\nThis Research Seminar was organized by Management & Organizations with ERA Chair in Social Innovation​ \n\n\n\nProf. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt presented “Social Innovation – International Trends and Challenges”. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbstract​ \n\n\n\nIn numerous countries\, initiatives have emerged in recent decades that aim to tackle growing social and environmental problems such as poverty\, exclusion\, climate change\, etc. in new ways. An important role has been played by the discussion on social innovation. Whereas innovation has so far primarily been aimed at the creation of new products and processes driven by the natural sciences and engineering\, social innovations will gain in importance in the future in connection with a growing dynamic of change. Social innovations are new social practices that aim to develop innovative solutions to existing social problems. Social innovations occur in various forms in our society and – just like technological innovations – are important drivers of social change: They change the way we live together\, work\, consume\, distribute wealth or deal with crises. In this context\, the cooperation of actors from different areas of society is of particular importance. While many social innovation initiatives initially emerged from civil society and were supported by civil society actors\, the topic has received increasing attention in politics\, business and science in recent years. Increasingly\, universities and research institutes are also getting involved in these initiatives. Against this background\, the lecture will deal with the conceptual foundations and international trends in social innovation research as well as the contribution of social innovations to addressing major societal challenges.

DESCRIPTION:Nova SBE Research Unit and ERA Chair in Social Innovation invited professor Anne-Claire Pache\, from ESSEC Business School in Paris\, for a Research Seminar. ​ \n\n\n\n​This Research Seminar was organized by Management & Organizations with ERA Chair in Social Innovation​ \n\n\n\n​Prof. Anne-Claire Pache presented “Attention Allocation in the Context of Institutional Pluralism: How Boards Manage Attentional Challenges in Hybrid Organizations”.​ \n\n\n\nAnne-Claire is Professor in Social Innovation at ESSEC Business School in Paris\, France. She is the chair holder of ESSEC’s Chair in Philanthropy. She graduated from ESSEC Business School in 1994\, holds a Master in Public Administration (2001) from Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from INSEAD (2010).​ \n\n\n\nHer research interests lie at the intersection of organizational theory and social innovation\, with a particular emphasis on pluralistic environments\, hybrid organizations\, and scaling-up processes in organizations. She has conducted qualitative studies in the field of social enterprises\, corporate philanthropy and private foundations. She has authored several books and articles\, including in the Academy of Management Review and Academy of Management Journal\, Journal of Business Ethics\, California Management Review and Leadership Quarterly. She served as ESSEC Dean for Academic Programs between 2014 and 2017 and is currently Associate Dean for Strategy and Sustainability. She is Associate Editor at Journal of Organization Design.​ \n\n\n\nBefore embarking on an academic career\, Anne-Claire Pache was part of the co-founding team of Unis-Cité\, a French nonprofit organization that pioneered youth civil service in France. She is still on the board of Unis-Cité today\, as well as of an Impact Investment Fund.​
