Growing together
The DESIS Lab @Nova SBE together with Johanna Pfeffer, a Master’s student in Management, with the support of Cascais municipality have been brainstorming the creation of a Nova SBE Community Garden in Rua da Holanda, a street that connects the school to the neighboorhoud.
A community garden is a place where different groups of people can meet, organize and participate to activities (such as yoga, mushroom growing, talks about permaculture or reading), and of course plant some flowers and herbs. In our case, we want our community garden to bring together students, teachers, staff and local residents to enjoy of all of these activities and many more!
We have the space, and we have some ideas, but we want to have all community members’ inputs because this community garden is your garden as much as ours!
The First Steps
After registering the community’s valuable feedback, Johanna has taken the initiative to launch the inaugural activities for the Nova SBE Community Garden. These activities serve as a foundational step towards the vibrant space we aim to create together, bringing the community’s dreams to life. In the two free and open workshops, participants were invited in creative and hands-on experiences that brought creativity, nature, sustainability and access to affordable and healthy food to attention.

“Art in Nature“
October 25th, 2023
An opportunity for all to discover the world of nature-inspired crafts through watercolor painting. Attendees enjoyed meditative sessions, learned watercolor techniques, and created their own unique pieces.
“Let’s Homegrown Mushrooms together“
November 4th, 2023 – Sold out
An activity open to anyone who wanted to learn more about mushrooms, their lifecycle, and their ecological significance. Participants were able to grow their own mushrooms.
We got a ramp! Stairs are Overrated!
Built with care by the amazing team from Cascais Ambiente, who have been instrumental in helping bring our garden dreams to life, in November 2024 we brought inclusivity to the forefront by ensuring everyone can easily access and enjoy our shared space in the make. We believe in a garden that’s welcoming to all, where everyone can contribute and flourish. The ramp is more than just a physical addition; it symbolizes our commitment to cultivating an inclusive community.

Designing the Community Garden at Nova SBE
February 24th, 2024 – 10am to 12pm
This workshop focused on feeling the space, learning and diving into the wishes of the community for the space and ideating spaces and solutions!
Guardians of the Garden
April 18th, 2024 – 10am to 12pm
3rd Graders from the Escola dos Lombos learned how to know more about the land and nurture it by being gnomes – guardians of the garden – with the DESIS Lab at Nova SBE.

Aula de Yoga no Jardim Comunitário da NovaSBE | Yoga Class – Community Garden at NovaSBE
July 6th, 2024 – 10am to 11am
A peaceful yoga session invited participants to connect with the space. Following the class, attendees viewed mockups of the garden project, shaped by insights from both the Nova SBE community and local residents while eating some nutrious and healthy snacks.
